SUS630 stainless steel: The perfect combination of high strength and corrosion resistance
In industrial and manufacturing fields, material performance requirements are extremely demanding. Materials must not only possess high strength but also resist corrosion in various environments. SUS630 stainless steel has gained widespread use under these demanding conditions. As a precipitation-hardening stainless steel, SUS630 is highly regarded for its excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance.

What is SUS630 stainless steel?
SUS630 stainless steel is the Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) designation for 17-4PH (UNS S17400) stainless steel. Its main composition includes approximately 17% chromium, 4% nickel, and small amounts of copper, niobium, and other elements. This stainless steel achieves high strength and hardness while maintaining a certain level of ductility and plasticity through precipitation-hardening processes.

Key characteristics:
1. High strength and hardness: After heat treatment, SUS630 can reach a tensile strength of 1100–1300 MPa and hardness of HRC30–40.
2. Excellent corrosion resistance: Performs well in both acidic and alkaline environments, with particularly strong resistance to chloride-containing environments.
3. Weldability: Compared to other high-strength stainless steels, SUS630 offers good weldability, suitable for various welding processes.
4. Machinability: Before hardening, SUS630 has good machinability and is suitable for various mechanical processing methods.

Due to its excellent performance, SUS630 is widely used across multiple industries:
1. Aerospace: Its combination of high strength and light weight makes it ideal for aircraft structural components, hydraulic systems, and engine parts.
2. Chemical equipment: Its corrosion resistance makes it suitable for manufacturing corrosion-resistant vessels, pumps, and valves.
3. Medical instruments: With biocompatibility and high strength requirements, SUS630 is often used in surgical instruments and implants.
4. Oil and gas: Suitable for components in oil and gas wells that must withstand high pressure and corrosive environments.

The mechanical properties of SUS630 stainless steel largely depend on its heat treatment process. Common heat treatment procedures include solution treatment and precipitation hardening:
Solution treatment: Heating to 1040–1060°C followed by rapid cooling. This process refines the microstructure, reduces grain size, and enhances ductility and machinability.
Precipitation hardening: Heating the solution-treated material to 480–620°C and then slowly cooling. This forms fine precipitates between grains, significantly increasing hardness and strength.
Thanks to its high strength, excellent corrosion resistance, and good machinability, SUS630 stainless steel has become a preferred material in multiple industries. It meets modern industrial demands for high-performance materials and continues to show potential for wider applications. Whether in high-end manufacturing or everyday equipment, SUS630 plays an essential role.
Looking ahead, ongoing advances in materials science are expected to further improve SUS630 stainless steel, particularly in microstructure optimization and heat treatment techniques. It is anticipated that SUS630 will continue to demonstrate its unique advantages in increasingly demanding applications.
